Buying New Hardware - The Cautious Warning

All that we request is that please take our advice on this page seriously, as we have had many clients run into the same difficult situations others have had previously.

Before ordering hardware, please ask one of the team here at JS about the specifications and configurations of them.

Ideally don't buy a system off advice from other online users, your own intuition or company bias such as a discount., as you don't know the implications of ordering them and what you are needing in order to run your network. We know how systems go together and what is needed for them, the right hardware you need and any other features.

There are many reasons behind not ordering straight away, such as:

  • You might get stuck in a commitment with a provider like OVH which you cannot remove under any circumstances. Another offer of another server being much more affordable and reasonable for the hardware you are getting will appear sooner rather than later.
  • A host's private internal bandwidth for your extended project. Some systems from said providers don't come with the additional features, like Game systems and Advance systems from OVH. Game doesn't, Advance does.
  • Using Hetzner's rescue system instead of installing an OS on the order. During configuration, you can change the RAID settings, hostname and much more on the configuration editor before installing the OS.
  • You can even get yourself in a problem where you can't get a refund from the provider due to commitment or other such "offers" which draw you in but "scam" you out in the long run such as special offers where if you actually work out the cost monthly instead of paying 12 months monthly (a commitment), you realize that it's better to do monthly.

Time is money and your business or community is very important. This guide should hopefully aid you in speaking with an expert before being too swift!
